Friday Give-away!

It’s a Friday!  Might be a good day for a give-away, ey? 😉

Lysol was one of our #BetterMe partners — has given some of the #SoMoms Lysol giftpacks to share with our readers.  It introduces some of their new products, such as the Lysol Liquid Handwash.

Disclaimer: Contents of Give-away may vary from photo.

Once upon a time (in a different lifetime), I used to work for Lysol.  Hence I became obsessed with germs and know about all these viruses and illnesses.  I remember we even ran a campaign in public bathrooms and I think that’s how I turned my friend Polly “OC” about using bathrooms too.  To this day I carry Lysol with me wherever I go, ESPECIALLY when we travel!

In any case — back then, while we new Lysol was a good surface disinfectant to stop the spread of viruses, the main culprit really of viruses passing is through the hands.  We all know this, it’s not new information, thus arose the advocacy of learning how to wash your hands well.  Even in the girls’ schools, the kids are taught how to scrub between their fingers and rub their nails through with soap after any activity.  The nice thing about Lysol’s new liquid handwash is that you know it’s not just clean, it’s also germ-free.  (Remember, clean and germ-free are two different things!  Clean is never enough!)

Anyway to cut to the chase, Lysol is giving out one gift pack to one lucky reader.  Do you want it to be you?  You know the drill! 🙂

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Happy germ-free weekend folks!

PS — Next week in light of going “back to school”, I will post all the learnings I’ve had in the last few #BetterMe sessions, including the one that Lysol sponsored!  So watch out for that!

Trekking Through Yosemite

Let today be a Throwback Travel Thursday! 🙂

Not too long ago we went on a summer family vacation with my husband’s brother and their family.  I’ve already talked about our first two legs on the Disney Cruise and Chapel Hill.  Now we move on to the West Coast part of our travels.

My husband and his brother grew up visiting National Parks and mountains.  I never did, so this was all new to me.  My husband once took us up to a National Park within North Carolina but I thought it was just for us to get away during Thanksgiving.  This trip to Yosemite was actually Sam’s and my second and Jamie’s first.  Thankfully, our little family is really okay with nature – and it turned out to be quite the adventure for us.

The first was the drive.  It was approximately two hours heading up, maybe three with some stops along the way.  I always stress about the long drives because I know that my kids don’t like being stuck in their car seats for very long.  Jamie especially gets really antsy and wants to be freed from her seat.  Unless of course they fall asleep, and then we’re pretty good for an hour or more out.  And then there’s the rest room stops in God-knows-where.  Hence I always travel with my Lysol in tow.

Going up wasn’t so much the problem; it was more when we got inside the National Park itself.  The roads became twisty and bendy, and even I got a little dizzy.

Here we go!

Here we go!

Once inside though, the sights were totally amazing.  Our first stop inside Yosemite was the Mariposa Grove, home of the Giant Sequoias.

After hours of winding roads, we arrive.

After hours of winding roads, we arrive.

Apparently there are two ways to get around, by foot or by tram.  We, the uber excited bunch chose to get around by foot.  (In hindsight, when traveling with small children AND if you get there in the afternoon — take the tram!)

Remember, you have to DOUBLE this distance because you've to WALK BACK!

Remember, you have to DOUBLE this distance because you’ve to WALK BACK!

The initial treks up were fairly easy, and the trees were really A-MAZING.  There was the famous Grizzly Giant.  The kids loved the idea that the branches of this tree were small trees in themselves.

The Grizzly Giant as far as we can see on the left, and a close up shot with my little hobbits on the right.

And then there was the tree that you could walk through.

Little hitchhiker

Everything was giant-sized.

B-I-G!

B-I-G!

We couldn’t even wrap ourselves around ONE tree!

Streeee-eetch!

Streeee-eetch!

Eventually the kids got tired and so we never made it up to the big Sequoia museum, where we’re told it’s a forest of all these big chunks of trees one after the other.  There weren’t many wild animals, just a few deer and some squirrels and birds.

The other thing about Yosemite, we discovered, that hotels and restaurants close early.  So it’s best to carry food and water with you in the car and have your meals there, in case you get stuck on some winding set of roads on the way back to the hotel.  In our case, we had gotten back from our 4 mile trek close to sundown, and ended up eating cereal and fruits for dinner.

Hungry Brood.

Hungry Brood.

OH!  A must-share:  Be prepared to pee (and poop) in holes.  HOLES!  The toilets inside the National Park are just that — holes with toilet seats over them.  There is no flush, no swishing of the water… none of that.  I still cringe when I think of the smell!  While I understand it is the most natural thing to do while out in the wild, I have to say I know my limits.  Especially when I bring the children along!  Good heavens!  I died with the toilet situation.  DIED.  My stress levels shot up (as high as them sequoias I tell ya!)

I forgot to take a photo of the lodge we stayed in but it was outside the National Park (my husband says it’s “more affordable” that way).   That meant another hour’s drive on winding roads in the dark.  Naturally with all the walking and the cold weather, we knocked out in the car, leaving our driver to the clear night sky and the stars.  We’d wake up close to midnight when we’d arrive because the cold sub-zero air temperature was like a splash of cold water on the body once you open the car door.  If memory serves me right, our place was called the Evergreen Lodge.   It’s your typical cozy cabin in the woods, and I quite liked it.  No TV, natural air but comfy, clean and spacious.  And they had wonderful bathrooms too!  😉

This was just the sofa bed. There was a real bed on the other side of the room!

This was just the sofa bed. There was a real bed on the other side of the room!

The next day, the kids were excited to explore again and so we headed on over to the more famous sites, like El Capitan.  The best view of this (unless you decide to climb it!) is in the valley, or the El Capitan Meadow.   Across it are also a great view of Cathedral Rocks.  We had the kids climb some fallen trees (well, the reality of it all was we weren’t able to stop them — and of course my heart was in my throat the whole time!), and got some awesome pictures in the process.

Saluting to El Capitan on the left, and the Cathedral Rocks on the right.

There are picnic areas as well where you can stop and grill some food, and the boys did just that.

We call it, The Brothers' Grill.

We call it, The Brothers’ Grill.

We had a nice outdoor picnic somewhere in the middle of the forest.  A sort of upgrade from the usual camping if you will.  The kids had some fun, running about in nature with no iPad in sight.  They played knights and princesses and all sorts of things in the trees.

Brave knights battle in the woods.

Sam and her cousins also got to see Yosemite falls, but Jamie was asleep in the car and so I stayed with her (and got to nap for an hour too!)

If you got close enough you could feel the spray!

If you got close enough you could feel the spray!

The thing about National Parks, is that you have to be ready to get in and out of the car to stop and enjoy the view.  There was this one point called the Tunnel View which gives you a view of El Capitan, the Half Dome and Bridalveil Falls all in one sight.  That was just one of the many “pull over!” moments we had.

Can you spot the three main attractions behind us?

Can you spot the three main attractions behind us?

And then — there was Glacier Point.  Now this is literally taking you from one climate change to the next.  Suddenly, there was snow!

It's a good thing we brought our winter gear!

It’s a good thing we brought our winter gear!

We were about 6,000 feet above sea level and lucky for us, the pass to Glacier Point had just opened the day before.  So we put on the winter gear and trekked up to Glacier Point.  The view was spectacular.  And even if you’re not fond of nature treks, it’s hard not to appreciate the natural wonders right in front of you.  It’s all breathtakingly beautiful.

We let the kids enjoy the snow / slush as we let them play in an area close by after.  It was Jamie’s first time to feel actual snow.  I don’t think she liked it as much! 😉

Frolicking in the cold snow (slush).

Frolicking in the cold snow (slush).

One the whole, it’s not such a bad idea going and staying in a National Park.  I wish we saw more wildlife though.  The experience is more challenging when you have little kids in tow.  Jamie couldn’t walk far, and so for most of the time, I had to carry her around.  And as it is with Jamie, she only wanted me and no one else.  Even Sam would get tired so after a while, she wanted to be carried too.  My body ached for most of the trip and I was always exhausted, but I think I lost 5 pounds in the process (Woohoo!).

If I were to go back, I’d do it when the kids were older, and they could appreciate a little bit more of the history behind the place.  And by then maybe I’d bring my own clean, disinfected private bathroom with me!!

Happy Ines Moda Infantil “Mow-dels”

If there’s one thing I know we have in abundance of, it’s photos.  Ever since I can remember I’ve just taken a camera and snapped photos.  In fact my husband has spent the last few nights clearing out our little office space (aka dumping ground)and he unearthed a box of CDs filled with pictures of our younger days.  He’s saved some too for throwback purposes, hehe. 😉  Thankfully now we can store digital copies of these things, otherwise he’d be under a mound of albums (I used to print and buy a lot of those thick photo albums!)

When the girls came along, the piles of CDs grew, and to this day, continue to grow.  Most of the memory of my computers are because of moments and pictures I refuse to delete.

How can you not love these moments?

How can you not love these moments?

And how fortunate have we been to have absolutely gorgeous photoshoots since the time we arrived in Manila.  Two years ago my best friend Polly the budding photographer took the girls one afternoon at the park.  And then last year, we were given as a gift, a shoot with the talented Shiela Catilo and then later in the year, The Picture Company shoot.  To my delight, our walls have been filled with updated, beautiful photos of the girls through the years.

And our fortune continues this year.  Ines our super friend and neighbor and owner of Ines Moda Infantil, asked if the girls could join the photoshoot for their upcoming website.  Of course the girls were thrilled and so we said yes.

YES! Of course they'd love to mow-del!

YES! Of course they’d love to mow-del!

And who wouldn’t want to model Ines Moda Infantil dresses?  They’re one of our favorite outfits, no kidding.  I even remember growing up with some of the dresses (Ines says that it was her mom who started it when she was born 30+ years ago, hence the name of the brand).  Their smocked dresses are great for special occasions, and they have some really pretty “dry-clean-only” wear that the girls feel like princesses in!

The girls' Christmas dresses were from Ines Moda Infantil!

Their latest collections have also had some wonderful pieces for everyday wear.  The girls have a lot of them in their closet and love them.  I’ve even stocked up on a few for them for when they’re older (in fear that the particular collection will run out if I don’t get it now!)  The dresses are cool and breezy, perfect for summer and tropical climates.  We’ve also given a few as gifts to friends in the states and have gotten nothing but compliments.

But back to the shoot! 🙂

Our first wonderful surprise was the photographer, Mon.

Mon the awesome photographer of the day! :)

Mon at work! 🙂

I’ve known her since we were kids!  I know she’s in the sandwich business now (check out The Pantry Sandwiches on Facebook) — and they’re really good too.  Apparently she has the equipment and the skills to take photos too.  We had a little mini reunion of sorts.

The second surprise were the girls.  I was quite nervous about Jamie being shy and unwilling (no qualms about Sam who enjoys the spotlight!), but as it turned out she wanted to do it too.  I suppose all the previous photo shoots in the past helped prep her for this one.  So the girls made the shoot quite easy.  And Mon was able to capture some really sweet shots of them together.

Sam also posed with Ines’ son Gabe, who was too cute in his little boy version of this collection.

Sam even had the confidence (errm, audacity?) to ask Ines is she could have a solo.

Or two.

Obviously Ines so graciously said yes!  Eventually Jamie wanted in on the fun too and so the girls had some extra time in front of the camera.  We also stayed behind to watch Mon at work with the other cute kids and their cute outfits.  I actually wanted to go and take everything home with me (as usual!).

So thank you Ines and Mon, for not only giving my little girls a fun afternoon in front of the camera, but for fulfilling this mom’s photo-addiction (of said little girls!) in the process!  Everything is frame-worthy! 🙂

Monitor your Life, with LIFE

Last Mother’s Day, Coach Pia gave some of us #SoMoms a Mother’s Day gift.  She had just come back from Europe and brought back with her a state of the art health monitoring system called LIFE.

The new One Core product. Such a good fit!

The new One Core product. Such a good fit!

LIFE is a non-invasive way of errr — monitoring your current state of life. 🙂  Or well, your current health condition.  It assesses how things are internally on the nerve levels, so that it can predict what illnesses or diseases a person is at risk for before it hits the chemical level.  And it’s already being done in all of the hospitals in Europe we’re told.

It's 90% accurate!

It’s 90% accurate!

It’s pretty cool if you think about it.  For women, it’s essential you don’t have your period (or you wait three days after you’ve gotten it) or aren’t pregnant for you to get an accurate read.  And you have to be above 12.  All you have to do is lie down and let a trained medical technician poke at the points on your arms and your legs which connect to the different parts of the body.  It’s over in about 15 minutes (You can imagine I lay down and tried to get a 15-minute nap in).

Ten minutes later you’re given an 11-page result on your current health condition.  You can see immediately how balanced or imbalanced you are for each system:  respiratory, alimentary, liver, kidneys, immune, cardiovascular, endocrine and anti-oxidant levels.

So my family and I went one morning and after an hour, we all got our results read to us at the same time.  We took my mom along too, and were glad to see the readings since we know we have to help her monitor her health conditions closely.

As for my results, generally I could be better.  My biggest watch out points are my liver and my kidneys.

Less alcohol, more water perhaps? Heehee ;)

Less alcohol, more water perhaps? Heehee 😉

My brother’s results on the other hand, all very balanced.  He’s got a fairly healthy lifestyle if I may say so myself, and very disciplined with his food, exercise and sleep (it’s not his age, our youngest sister had worse results, he he).  So it shows.

There’s even a Yin and Yang analysis, where the dots should generally be within the green space to show your over-all energy balance.  Thankfully I don’t stray too far, for now…

All within the green zone. Whew!

All within the green zone. Whew!

Essentially, the report gives you the POSSIBLE illnesses you could contract if you don’t watch it or do something about it now.

I'm showing signs of those underlined in red. Hmmmm.

I’m symptoms of  those underlined in red. Hmmmm.

So no, I do not have these yet, but with my current state of eating and being, I am susceptible to these conditions if I’m not careful.  Quite honestly I’ve noticed that I’ve started having more headaches recently, and that I’m easily fatigued, particularly on the nights when I get very little sleep.  In my younger college days, I could go two or three nights without sleep (college days) and still manage to function.   Apparently not anymore!  As my father-in-law likes to say — “You’re no Spring Chicken!

The good thing about LIFE is that after the diagnostics are explained, there are clear next steps for you to take to make the changes you need.

Mine essentially says more sleep (haha!  Oh boy.), deep breathing exercises, massages (oooh!), and even yoga and acupuncture.  My diet will need to change — healthier food choices, less salt.  In other words, my stress levels are off the chart and need to be watched carefully.  It may not be something totally new, but it’s always a good reminder to get and to see where things are.  I’m fortunate mine aren’t yet still at horrible or dangerous levels and can still be improved over time.

LIFE is a test that you can take over and over again.  Because it measures your “current” state, if you make changes to your lifestyle, then the next reading could be different.  The recommendation is for you to take the test at least once a month until you see a constant improvement.  It’s such a perfect addition to The One Core’s repertoire because it really is a tool that can help us make better life decisions.

Thank you Coach Pia, for the gift of LIFE! 🙂

The One Core has made LIFE very affordable with each test at P3,000.  But since they’ve just introduced it into the market, they’re giving us all 50% off for every scan until June 30!  You can make your bookings and appointments with Nimfa at 0922-894-4143.

Our Very Own Junior Bake Off

I have to say thanks to Discovery Kids and Shine Bakery Cafe for giving Sam and myself another excuse for a Mommy-Sam date last week.

Shine Bakery Cafe is located at the 3/F of SM Aura.

Shine Bakery Cafe is located at the 3/F of SM Aura.

We had the privilege of attending the launch affair of Discovery Kids’ upcoming show, Junior Bake Off.  The show features 32 kids ages nine through twelve from all across Britain battle it out in the kitchen.  That should be fun if you’re into cooking shows and contests, and it’s quite the new concept, having kids in the kitchen.  Am quite curious to see how good these kids are really!

The show is hosted by Aaron Craze, a chef and a father himself.  The creations of the kids will be done by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, both well-known people in the cooking / baking field.

And as a sample of what to expect, Sam and I along with a few other parents and kids, were treated to a little bake-off of our own.  Actually given the amount of time we had, it was more of a design-off, which was a good thing too because I don’t know how Sam and I would fare in the kitchen! 😉

The kids were divided into groups of three, each one having their own Chef Coach.  Sam’s team was coached by Chef Gio — and Sam took to him right away (maybe because he’s my brother’s namesake!).  Chef Gio gave each child two cupcakes and two eclairs to decorate.  He taught them how to use the piping and move it in different ways to get different shapes.  He was also very supportive and encouraged them to have fun with it.

Chef Gio explaining what the kids need to do.

Of course, it is baking and creating and sweets — so Sam was in her element.  I love it when I see how Sam is pleased with herself and her work.  I sometimes feel like I have to tell her to simplify (as it is the nature of a Peacock to go overboard!), but I catch myself.  It’s her activity and her creation anyway, she should be able to do as she pleases.

Sam enjoys these types of activities. Which is why I take the time to bring her!

Sam enjoys these types of activities!

Even fellow #SoMom Cai and her daughter Y joined in on the fun, but they were in another Chef’s team.

Cai and Y hard at work!

At the end the kids were asked to name their creations and present it to everyone.  Some of the kids had one name for all four pieces, but Sam took the time to name each and every one of hers.

Once the picture taking was done, each Chef was asked to award a Best in Cupcake and Best in Eclair from each of their teams.  This was a surprise twist for me — I was expecting a group competition, but as it turned out, each member was competing against each other.

Being the non-competitive person that I am, I focused on Sam having fun and enjoying the entire experience.  She was quite confident though that something in her set would win.  “They told me mom, I was very creative!”  And sure enough, her Fairy Sailboat Eclair won in her group!  She was over the moon!

And really to be fair, it did look like a boat full of Pixie Dust!

Best of all, we got to take it all home and Jamie got her Bunny cupcake. 🙂

Y won Best in Eclair too in her group!  Maybe the #SoKids have a talent for eclairs. 😉

Congrats Y! :)

Congrats Y! 🙂  Good job!

Thank you again to the Chefs at Shine Bakery Cafe and the Discovery Kids team for inviting us to experience our own junior bake-off.  It was a fun, delicious experience!
