Our Very Own Junior Bake Off

I have to say thanks to Discovery Kids and Shine Bakery Cafe for giving Sam and myself another excuse for a Mommy-Sam date last week.

Shine Bakery Cafe is located at the 3/F of SM Aura.

We had the privilege of attending the launch affair of Discovery Kids’ upcoming show, Junior Bake Off.  The show features 32 kids ages nine through twelve from all across Britain battle it out in the kitchen.  That should be fun if you’re into cooking shows and contests, and it’s quite the new concept, having kids in the kitchen.  Am quite curious to see how good these kids are really!

The show is hosted by Aaron Craze, a chef and a father himself.  The creations of the kids will be done by Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood, both well-known people in the cooking / baking field.

And as a sample of what to expect, Sam and I along with a few other parents and kids, were treated to a little bake-off of our own.  Actually given the amount of time we had, it was more of a design-off, which was a good thing too because I don’t know how Sam and I would fare in the kitchen! 😉

The kids were divided into groups of three, each one having their own Chef Coach.  Sam’s team was coached by Chef Gio — and Sam took to him right away (maybe because he’s my brother’s namesake!).  Chef Gio gave each child two cupcakes and two eclairs to decorate.  He taught them how to use the piping and move it in different ways to get different shapes.  He was also very supportive and encouraged them to have fun with it.

Of course, it is baking and creating and sweets — so Sam was in her element.  I love it when I see how Sam is pleased with herself and her work.  I sometimes feel like I have to tell her to simplify (as it is the nature of a Peacock to go overboard!), but I catch myself.  It’s her activity and her creation anyway, she should be able to do as she pleases.

Sam enjoys these types of activities. Which is why I take the time to bring her!

Even fellow #SoMom Cai and her daughter Y joined in on the fun, but they were in another Chef’s team.

At the end the kids were asked to name their creations and present it to everyone.  Some of the kids had one name for all four pieces, but Sam took the time to name each and every one of hers.

Once the picture taking was done, each Chef was asked to award a Best in Cupcake and Best in Eclair from each of their teams.  This was a surprise twist for me — I was expecting a group competition, but as it turned out, each member was competing against each other.

Being the non-competitive person that I am, I focused on Sam having fun and enjoying the entire experience.  She was quite confident though that something in her set would win.  “They told me mom, I was very creative!”  And sure enough, her Fairy Sailboat Eclair won in her group!  She was over the moon!

And really to be fair, it did look like a boat full of Pixie Dust!

Best of all, we got to take it all home and Jamie got her Bunny cupcake. 🙂

Y won Best in Eclair too in her group!  Maybe the #SoKids have a talent for eclairs. 😉

Congrats Y! :)

Congrats Y! 🙂  Good job!

Thank you again to the Chefs at Shine Bakery Cafe and the Discovery Kids team for inviting us to experience our own junior bake-off.  It was a fun, delicious experience!
