Developing the Fine Motor Skills

I was reading about the five (or four, depending on which group you consult) developmental areas for a child’s development and did my own personal assessment of where Sam falls in each.  Her previous pre-school teachers said in their report last June that her abilities are age appropriate… all I needed to hear really.  I feel that has helped her quickly adjust and adapt to her new Montessori-based pre-school (more on this soon!) where she mingles with the older kids.

Now that I am looking for new things for us to do together on a regular basis outside of school, I realized that the biggest opportunity for us to work on are her fine motor skills.  Don’t get me wrong, I feel that all her current activities — school, Kumon, even her playdates and activities with friends — all contribute to that and the other aspects of her development.  But to be honest, when I consciously think about it, fine motor-skills aren’t exactly my strong suit either.  So in retrospect, I noticed that the choices of our activities tend to consciously strengthen the other aspects more.

I started reading up on fine motor skills and activities that I could do with Sam to focus on developing this in her further (If that makes me a nerdy mom, so be it, haha!).  Note that this is in no way scientific; it’s just our idea of learning fun.

  • More Play-Doh activities.  Art activities in general such as drawing, coloring, painting, and even learning to write should help develop this further; but by allowing Sam to push the play-doh together and pinch it with her fingers should gradually build control and strength in them.  I’ve also purchased several art materials that help build her attention to detail — gluing and pasting small items for instance.
  • My Mommyology Kumon Cut-outsKumon Workbooks.  I found a few workbooks on Amazon for Sam’s age that encourage her to cut, fold, paste, and write.  I realized Sam has never held a pair of scissors up until a few days ago when I ordered a set of child-friendly Melissa & Doug scissors for her to use for her workbooks.  It is actually a fun exercise that helps develop a child’s hand-control.  Since then, everyday she has asked to “cut paper” and we’ve made a few fun things tied together with “sticky tape”, as Sam calls it.  The other workbooks are parked on my Amazon wish list, for easy access in the future.
  • My Mommyology Buttons, Zippers and SnapsZip, Snap, Button, Tie…

Practice with the Basic Skills Board (and others like it).  This is the next item on my wish list once Sam has exhausted the newness and activities of all the other items mentioned above.  In her new pre-school her teacher mentioned that she enjoyed their buttons and zipper activities, and Sam echoed this activity repeatedly when she told me about her day at school.  I’m quite excited because it will definitely make dressing her up much easier in the long run!

  • iPad and iPhone Games.  Okay, I know this is controversial to some parents, but I’ve actually found that there are a lot of good games toddlers can play on these gadgets that can help with their finger control.  Sam has been adept with the iPod since she was a year old and so now it’s very easy for her to navigate and find the ones she likes.  She paints, draws, makes puzzles, and does all these other things I’ve never seen her do before!  So I find it an amazing tool.

There we have it!  My own ad hoc attempts at fine motor skill development.  Of course we have to remember that she’s also only just turning three, so I don’t expect any of these to be perfected or mastered in the next few months.  I do believe though that exposing it to her this early and making it fun for her to do, will make progress through these skills easier in the future.  Who knows, she may even enjoy crocheting (a high school subject I absolutely despised!)!

The Sniffles

Jamie at 5 months has gotten her first case of the sniffles (well it’s more of a runny nose kind of a situation but sniffles sound cuter and go more with her personality).  Another one of the things she lovingly picked up from her big sister Sam, as Sam does not discriminate when or when not to kiss (or cough) on her little sister.  We’re working on it though.

Normally Jamie has a very calm and quiet disposition, but not so much when she’s sick.  My little angel, the one who has made me believe again that babies CAN sleep through the night, is having a rough time of it.  She has been getting up almost every hour and needs to be held up or rocked to sleep in an upright position.  Plus she is clingy and looks for me more than ever.  As a result of course, I am losing sleep.  And I think I’ve mastered the Smooth Jazz Channel’s musical repertoire while creating all sorts of dance steps along the way.

I can’t stay in bed because I’m afraid that Sam will wake up as well (ahh the perils of co-sleeping!), as she is the lighter sleeper of the two.  So each time Jamie wakes up, I scoop her up and run out the bedroom into our rocking chair.  If I am lucky, Jamie will let me sit down and we both fall asleep there rocking her to sleep.  It’s amazing she hasn’t fallen out of my arms yet!  That being said, does anyone know where I can get new arms and wrists (and if the deal comes with a refurbished back, I WILL TAKE IT!)?

My Mommyology Little Noses Baby RubWorks like Vics but is milder.

Normally for colds and runny noses, I have what we call our “cold remedy kit” — with an aspirator, some nose drops, a vaporizer and some baby rub.  It’s still not easy though to listen to her cry as much as she has in the last three days, and that makes me feel helpless.  It’s a good thing she has a lot of cute cuddly fat stores that help her get by since she is not nursing as much either.

Because she is so young our pediatricians here prefer we stay away from any cold medication as much as possible, for as long as she doesn’t have a fever.  I actually kind of like that practice — since I find that when I’m in Manila, I’m very dependent on finding a quick medicated cure for everything.  Instead they’ve recommended exposing Jamie to the natural “vapors” that come from a hot steam room or bath, which help loosen the mucus so that it comes out of her nose (or through her poop).  All of these combined make it easier and hopefully it will only be a few more days until the cold actually does go away.

I managed to get through the week by infusing my system with coffee, chocolates and sodas.  Somehow it has helped, but really the best way I’ve found to combat my sleep deprivation and exhaustion is this:

One look is all it takes to re-energize me and keep me going for the day.  How can it not? 🙂

Once On A Mac, There’s No Turning Back

I was getting the girls ready to leave the other day and caught sight of our dining room table that I just had to take a picture.

My Mommyology Apple Products We Own

Apple literally runs our lives. (Missing: another iPhone, the old iPods, and a Time Capsule.)

It was only then when I realized what an Apple family we’ve turned out to be.  They have the best loyalty scheme and repeat purchase strategy ever, I tell you.  You don’t know you’ve actually gotten sucked into it until it’s too late and if you want your life to stay easy, then there is no way out of it!

Not that I’m complaining.  Well, not really anyway.  I do love all Apple products and software and while I have had my share of frustrations, I’d still have to say that the entire package that they offer is far more superior than any of the other available options (In my humble opinion).  I once read an article about how they don’t actually do consumer research, but think about what they would want and proceed to develop it from there.  That works, because more often that not consumer research will just give you a pulse of what’s already out there.  But for a lighthouse brand such as Apple, they get to create and dictate what should come next (In other related news, I wonder what Steve Jobs’ most recent announcement is going to do to them in the next few years!) .

I was recently talking to a sales representative, as I upgraded my MacBook Air to a MacBook Pro, and consequently shifted from a Leopard to a Lion.  The Air is still to be used within our home, but I hear that while compatible it is much easier if both units are on the same operating system (ie OX S Lion), and at the same time, I couldn’t install the most current software on the Air because the software required the newer operating systems to run.   Anyway, the sales representative was telling me that upgrading from a Leopard to a Snow Leopard to a Lion would only cost me $60, much cheaper than any other operating system that competitors were offering.  While that might be true, I couldn’t help but think that the reason why it appears “cheap”, is because all the other items and peripherals are sold separately at various “affordable” prices and you don’t realize it until you’ve purchased all of it.  Then you compute that you’ve spent a little bit more than you bargained for.

A few months later when the launch of more updated products and software come out, you actually end up spending again.  Whether you decide to wait another round or just upgrade as the new ones come, you spend the same.  Either way, they draw you (and your repeat business in), hook, line and sinker.  It’s no wonder that Apple is every now and then is the #1 global company (depending on whether Exxon performs well this quarter or not).

That is marketing, what else can I say.

(Back to the thought on Steve Jobs… man.  What’s it going to be like without him?)

Bright Shiny and New!

My Mommyology wide-eyed and bushy tailed

Borrowed from redbubble.com

This is my first post on the newly migrated site.  I can’t believe how fast that all happened.  Just one night of no sleep and voila!  Here we are.

The picture I just attached?  That is what I look like now (yes, including the white fur around the face).

I am in the middle of sorting through all the newness, and hopefully after some coffee, sleep and food in my system (in any particular order), then we can once again resume our regular programming.

Cheerio!

The East Coast Earthquake

My Mommyology Earthquake Map

Taken from USA Today's report of the earthquake

According to the latest news, tweets and Facebook posts, there was a 5.9 intensity earthquake in various parts of the East Coast, including North Carolina.

Why didn’t I feel it?  When I think of the time, I was either reading a book to Sam before her nap, or rocking Jamie to sleep and falling asleep myself.

Then again maybe I did — I just didn’t recognize it.  If I was rocking Jamie to sleep then naturally the side-to-side movement would have covered it up.  Well, then again with both girls under the weather with runny noses and little (rephrase:  sporadic amount of) sleep I got last night made me think it was just me swaying and not the entire East Coast.

In any case, I do hope everyone is okay!  Stay away from tall buildings today as there are reports of aftershocks.

The last thing anyone needs right now is another calamity.
