#TrustedTools That Really Help Moms

There is a give-away at the end of this post!

I’ve been thinking about Chapel Hill a lot these last few days.  I miss the simplicity and the uncomplicated pace of life we had then.  Have I said this before?  Maybe.  It’s still a recurring theme for me, and I continue to surprise people when I say I’d still choose to move back despite all the other “helping hands” that are available to us here.

I’m always asked how I managed a home with two kids, no yaya and a husband who was working full-time (and really over there, I found it much easier!  But more on that in a separate post).  A majority of it I owe to a lot of the items that made the day-to-day life from the birth of one child, to the raising of two, a whole lot easier.

When I go through my list of #TrustedTools from five years ago through to today, I realize that a lot of what we used were Philips Avent products.  When both girls were babies, I’d pump milk and place them in the storage cups for the nights when I couldn’t wake up and Dad had to take over the feeding.  I thank the Avent bottle warmer for bringing the stored milk back up to room temperature (no microwaving!).  We also had an Avent sterilizer that quickly got every baby item sterile in no time at all.

As the girls were growing up and adding solids to their food regimen, there were the Avent plates, saucers and utensils that made eating colorful and fun.  They learned to feed themselves.  These plates, saucers, and spoons would fall (and quickly get sterilized!), but thankfully there were splat mats to catch the mess.  At the end of the day, we’d just toss the dirt from the splat mat and wipe it away.

The new Philips Avent range has feeding sets with suction cups at the bottom, to help kids get a better grip (pun intended)  on their food.  It makes it much easier and you may not even need a splat mat anymore since there’s no more mess to catch!

Even on the road, the girls had their no-spill snack cups and sippy cups so they could feed themselves in their car seats while I drove to and fro.  And can I just say — about these sippy cups.  There came a point when my husband would open the cabinet and all kinds of sippy cups would fall on his head (he hasn’t let me forget it).  I call this period in time:  “The Search for the Perfect Sippy Cup”.

My husband would complain about how little fluids the girls would get with some no-spill sippy cups, and I couldn’t really count on the girls to stay dry if I handed them one of the more “open” ones while we ran errands.  Reaching back every now and then to give them a sip wasn’t really the safest solution to our problem.

That was until we discovered the Avent Natural Cup.  This one has a round enough spout so the child doesn’t have to suck the life out of it to get water.  It’s also lip-activated, meaning it will only pour out the water when the child is ready to drink from it.  And once the child stops, it also stops!  It’s quite the innovation!  Jamie made good use of hers, and she still did up until a few months ago when she switched to a regular straw like her Ate.  It was a shame though that we didn’t find it earlier for Sam to use too.

This was Jamie's 1st good cup!

It’s innovations like these that bring brands like Avent closer to a mom’s heart.  It feels like every mother’s needs for her child are thought-through.  Not only that, the products are made with utmost quality, it’s guaranteed to last.  To this day, Avent continues to innovate and improve their line of what I fondly call #TrustedTools, to help make mom’s job of caring for her child(ren) easier.  They have the New Natural of products including a breast pump that some of my fellow #SoMoms swear by.  They also have an improved baby monitor which was reviewed by Kris of OcMominManila.  And there are other Avent gadgets too like the blender to help process food; all tools which can help ease mom through the parenting roller coaster.  After all, we do need all the help we can get!

***

And because Avent wants more moms to experience their Trusted products, they’re giving away THREE Avent Natural Cups right here, right now! 🙂

For this promo, we’d like a little bit more audience participation.  So we’ll ask you to take a photo of your most #TrustedTool that has helped you through your parenting journey, and post it on your Instagram account (please set your profile settings to Public so Philips Avent can see the photo!).  The other raffle entries are easy, and should give you a better chance at winning. 🙂

Mommy’s Night Out

Once in a while an impromptu night out with old friends happens.  Old — referring to friends of my childhood and those I’ve been with for a long time… but yes I suppose we’re not spring chickens anymore either. 😉

Impromptu is big in my world as most of us are now moms with other responsibilities.  We all work around our kids’ schedules first, and then try to fit in time for ourselves in between.  And as you know, I’m a planner and I like sticking to a routine.  And maybe it’s also because my generation of friends — (i’ll say it again) we’ve all just gotten older.  Plus the worsening traffic situation doesn’t give any added incentive.  So it’s rare that we get to go out for (alcoholic) drinks these days.  Usually it’s coffee or lunch over a play date with the kids, or a pre-planned special occasion get-together.

But one night the stars aligned for me, Polly and Chin, and our schedules allowed us to leave.  Our husbands didn’t have much of a choice I think 😉 (But they were all good sports about it anyway).  And so there we were, three mothers released into the wild (we were very tame about it though),  happy hour drinks for each hand.

I think we would have had more if happy hour hadn't ended.

I think we would have had more if happy hour hadn’t ended.

The wonderful thing about old friends is the history.  The jokes can go all the way back but still remain relevant.  The sessions, they aren’t really “vent” sessions but rather a stress-reliever and a way to laugh at oneself and the rest of the world.  Sometimes out of our tispy stupor (I will admit that age and lack of practice comes the decreased tolerance levels), we cry at the darndest, and the most serious things.  The conversations and emotions jump, but we’re able to follow.

And… there’s of course, the good ol’ reliable gossip.  Or in our culture, we say chismis.  Now I know we teach our kids not to gossip about other people, and really and truly I try to practice this myself and be an example (heck I don’t want to be gossip-ed about either).  But when you’re with these kinds of friends, having these kinds of drinks (after THAT kind of a week), then why not!  Besides, it’s merely a bonding tool and it goes down with the alcohol and stays only with us.  It’s a girl thing! 😉

The best part of it is, while they’re the oldest of friends, we still stay very current and updated.  Parenting our children is just one of the many things we talk about, and all of its ups and downs and ins and outs.  And there’s no judgement whatsoever.  You know that you can just let it all hang loose.

I find that when I come back from these rare Mommy’s Nights Out, despite it being late at night with nonstop banter, I feel re-energized.  It’ relaxes me in a way.  All the happy vibes carry through and I have more patience to tackle the day-to-day things, particularly the kids.

Every mom should have this kind of a support group.  Alcohol or not.  Doesn’t matter how big or small, how scarcely or frequently it happens; but it’s good for the soul when it does.  And while I will teach my girls to transcend and manage their ego where and when appropriate, when they are mothers themselves, I’d wish for them to have 2 or 3 “old friends” they gossip the happy hours away with. 🙂

Cheers!

The Two Tots 2013 Christmas Catalogue

Bea and I have spent the last few months putting together this year’s Two Tots Christmas Catalogue!  I’m so glad it’s ready, and we’re excited to share it with you.  The first thing I will say is if you’re not on the Two Tots mailing list yet, please do get on it pronto!  Just send an email to inquiries@twotots.net so you can receive all the exciting news that we send (Don’t worry, we don’t flood emails so it’s one comprehensive newsletter at a time). 🙂

The thought process behind the items was that it had to be something practical, useful, fun, timeless and thoughtful — or a combination of any and all of the above.

First up:  we kept the widely popular personalized line of Christmas stockings, Santa Sacks, Aprons and Drawstring Bags (to name a few).  As a customer of Two Tots not long ago, I purchased Santa sacks for my girls.  They’d be used as the sacks Santa would leave his presents in.  There was no need for Santa to gift wrap, and no need to write a note (which is what gave away Santa for me in my younger days!).  After that, the sacks were easy to tote around our three other Christmases to put all their loot in.

Of course they knew the gifts were from Santa because well... he's sitting on them! ;)

Of course they knew the gifts were from Santa because well… he’s sitting on them! 😉

A lot of people have asked me about the Large sack and the XL sack and why it’s the same price.  Basically it’s just the orientation of the bag that’s different, but the amount of cloth used is the same. 🙂

The stockings, the aprons and the drawstring bags!

The drawstring bags are great for kids to put extra clothes in and take to school, or put some toys in to take to a friend’s house.  It’s all washable (please iron on the reverse side always!), so it’s easy to keep clean and store.  And they’re a gift that’s under P300!  This year we added another design for the boys:  soccer balls!  And the best part about it being personalized is that it won’t get lost.

Some notes:  For the personalized items, we’re doing them in batches this year due to the high volume of orders.  Our next batch of production will run for orders placed by October 30.  This will ensure you get your personalized items on or before November 30.  To secure your order, don’t forget to make the 50% deposit and send us a scanned copy of the deposit slip!

Then there are the regular items of Two Tots that are also great gift items  A lot of them can be found in Babyland and the ID Ideas for Living branches, but we’re happy to accept orders directly as well.  There are the usual clip hangers, different shaped chalk boards (with chalk!), and the magnetic boards; all useful, handy and very practical.

Fun and easy gifts to give!

Fun and easy gifts to give!

There are a lot more, including some items from our new collection of Crib Sets, Bean Bags and Hampers, but I will leave all of that to the imagination for now (and also so that you can join our mailing list to see!).

And of course — what is Christmas without food!

Because of last year’s successful partnership with Maga’s Kitchen, we decided to go on ahead and do it again!  This time, Maga herself collaborated with us for some of her new items that are perfect gifts for families, co-workers, aunts, uncles and friends.

The Lemon squares and Mango Nut loaf are sold at P250 a box.

The Lemon squares and Mango Walnut loaf are sold at P250 a box.

We have designed personal trays and packaged them along with Maga’s Lemon Squares (box of 15) and Maga’s Kitchen Mango Walnut Loaf — a new creation.  It’s absolutely delectable, I kid you not.  My husband can finish a whole loaf in one sitting (and he’s the pickiest eater in our household) If you ask me, it’s a wonderful alternative to the usual fruit cake.

The trays come in a black and white Damask or a distressed green finish with gold trim.  They’re also sold separately at P295 each, but are given at a discount when purchased with some Maga’s Kitchen items.  I don’t want to spoil the surprise here, but all the details will be in our newsletter soon, so be sure to open it up!

The best part is, you just have to give us your order.  Maga’s requires orders a week in advance (also of course with the 50% deposit), and then we take care of packaging it all for you and letting you know when it’s ready to pick up.  It’s giving yummy food the Two Tots way! 😉

We have so so so much more in store for you all this coming season, Bea and I are bursting at the seams (not to mention all the taste testing we’ve done!  Yum!).  So start your Christmas list, and check it twice!  We hope to make this Christmas shopping a little less hectic and a little bit more fun for you!

Two Tots will also be at the Mommy Mundo Bazaar at the Rockwell Tent on November 10 and December 8.  We will have all our Christmas items and food there for actual shopping and order-taking.  Be sure to drop by and stay tuned for what you can possibly win from Mommy Mundo! 🙂

Taking Care of Ate

It’s so much easier for me to teach Sam how to relate to Jamie.  As an eldest child myself, I often understand the position Sam is in.  I naturally see their relationship from that perspective.  I can talk to Sam from experience and reason with her in the way an Ate is expected to think, act and be.  Often times when I leave the house, I “pin the responsibility” of peace and order on Sam.  “You’re the Ate, so make sure Jamie doesn’t cry for me okay?”

Sam takes it very well, and at 5 she seems to know her role and place by heart.  And we’re lucky she’s a super duper sweet big sister, and she naturally thinks about Jamie and cares for her.  I can see that years from now, Sam will naturally look out for her baby sister like any Ate does (or should).   Jamie is going to be in good hands with her.

At the same time, I think… someone has to watch out for Sam too.  And who better person to do that than Jamie.

When we talk of birth order, the responsibility often comes naturally to an eldest child.  The younger one isn’t normally in the picture.  In fact a lot of the time, not much is expected of the younger ones.  They’re often the ones that can get away with a lot more things by virtue of their birth rank.

But Jamie in school doesn’t act like a youngest child.  Her teachers have said that while she is the youngest, she’s also the most independent.  In fact she sometimes finishes her work faster than some of her classmates and so she’s asked to help the others when she can.

I kind of like that set-up where the younger kids step up and take more responsibility and care for other people outside themselves.  I know of a friend whose middle child helps the older one with her Math.  I love stories like that, and how both girls are humble enough to teach and learn from one another.  That’s how they can take care of each other, and I want that in my family too.

For now, I find moments where Jamie can build her responsibility over Sam.  Usually it’s the other way around, but with Jamie’s budding independence and ability to do things on her own in school, I don’t see why we can’t translate that into something she should be doing first and foremost here at home.

So occasionally, I have Jamie give Sam a bath.

I had to crop the picture to protect my kids' privacy! But you errr... get the picture. ;)

I had to crop the picture to protect my kids’ privacy! But you errr… get the picture. 😉

Well, I have her help at least.  And it teaches Jamie what to do for herself rather than just sitting like a princess all the time and waiting for things to happen for her.

Jamie loves to brush and fix herself.  So I have her do that for Sam too.

Brush, brush, brush the hair...

Brush, brush, brush the hair…

It works out because Sam is often too busy to want to stop and brush her own hair.  So Jamie plays a part in Sam’s grooming.  And it helps me too, even if it’s not always a perfect brush.

There are other smaller instances that I purposely assign to Jamie instead of Sam.  I feel it also builds her confidence, and teaches her how to relate to her sister in a different way.  She’s not always the one looked out for; she can look out for herself and for someone else.  At night, it’s Jamie who reminds Sam that she needs to put on lip gloss so that their lips don’t dry out while they sleep.

Love seeing this. :)

Love seeing this. 🙂

There’s no question in my mind that Jamie loves her Ate Sam.  Even if they fight (everyday!) and someone is always in tears, I know it’s just a part of their growing up together.  Jamie adores and looks up to Sam and learns a lot from her sister too.   My hope is that that in the future, Jamie will also teach her Ate and continue to help her out as she will surely have her own talents and strengths.  To me, their birth order doesn’t (shouldn’t) matter.  As they grow up I want to avoid the issue of egos where just because Sam is older, she can’t learn something valuable from her younger sister.  Each will have something to bring to the table that the other can benefit from, and become a better person because of it.  On a deeper level, it gives them both the opportunity and the responsibility to actually take care of each other in the truest sense of the phrase.

The Curves Commitment

If you’ve followed my blog over the last few years, you’d have seen several attempts and entries about my declaration of getting back into shape.  The operative word is “try” (and I didn’t even use it in the sentence!).

My brother (who is now a fitness / health addict and is on our case about living a healthier lifestyle), says that my sleep deprivation, stress, and inconsistent eating and exercise patterns work against all my little efforts to try to get back to my pre-baby body.  But can you blame me?  It’s only when the kids are asleep do I have time to work and check off items from my to-do list.  Sometimes I’m so busy I forget to eat and I end up eating the wrong things at the wrong times.  Sometimes with everything I have to do — I will admit — exercise takes a backseat.  There are days (like last Monday!) when I’d scheduled a workout, but at the last-minute my daughter’s school declares it a holiday and so now I have the kids on my hands.

But yes of course, I still try… I’ve never really paid much attention to the statistics of it all, until I walked into Curves.

Curves is the largest fitness franchise in the world that caters specifically (and ONLY) to women’s fitness and nutrition.  It is a 30-minute circuit workout that’s designed to move every major muscle group.  The workout supposedly gets you to burn 500 calories by mixing cardio, strength-training and stretching in that amount of time.

The entrance to the Curves fitness circuit.

The entrance to the Curves fitness circuit.

There are a lot of things about Curves that appeal to women.  Here are some of the reasons why I take interest:

It’s a 30-minute circuit.  My biggest constraint on a daily basis is time.  Sometimes when I go to a gym or a class, the program itself is an hour.  To add in the time to get there and the time to get out, cool down and take a shower would mean I’ve already lost 3/4’s of my morning.  At Curves, because the whole workout is exactly only 30 minutes long, I can safely get everything else compressed into an hour, and that makes a big difference.  Plus, it doesn’t feel like 30-minutes when you work out, because every 30 seconds, an omnipresent female voice will call out above the music, “change stations now.”  Literally, I walk in and put my things down, and then after 30 minutes, I walk out and I’m done.

2 rounds of machine-recovery-machine will have supposedly made you burn 500 calories.

2 rounds of machine-recovery-machine will have supposedly made you burn 500 calories in 30 minutes.

There’s a trainer built-in to the routine.  Unlike other regular gyms where a physical trainer costs extra (and all he does is send you to the treadmill for a third of the hour), this one has a female instructor at the center of the circuit.  Her role is to give us options as to what to do with our recovery time (this is the 30 seconds in between each machine station where you can jump and dance and move around as you please), and to make sure we you work hard on the machines in proper form and speed.

They're young and they all swear by the program. It's done wonders for them they say.

Trainers, all female too!

There’s versatility and flexibility in the routine.  I learned from a wise coach that sometimes it’s good to confuse our muscles.  I was wondering how that would work in a circuit like Curves where the machines are technically the same.   I learned that there’s no one starting point in the Curves circuit, so we can start in a different spot each time.  The other is that the people at Curves re-arrange the machines each month.  Then there’s also the circuit with Zumba mixed into it.  That could shake things up a bit — if you catch my drift. 😉

You get as much as you give.  According to the trainers, the weight or resistance the machines give depends on the person using it.  It gets heavier when you go faster and try to get more reps in.  So it’s not a cop-out really.  A lot of it still depends on you and how much of a push you want to give that day.

Great music is always a factor.  My husband says I have two left feet.  He’s probably right, but it doesn’t mean I can’t keep a beat. 😉  The music at Curves is fun.  Honestly it makes me forget what I look like when I move, but it’s always nice to move to and let the sweat just take over.  Anyway, there are no mirrors in Curves, and the outside glass is frosted enough so people can’t peek inside.  I realized I don’t get self-conscious in there!

They guarantee results.   If there was one thing that got me interested, it was that they guarantee losing inches and pounds with their program, IF you can commit to exercising 3x a week.  And to prove they’re serious, they take your measurements and vitals at the beginning of your first workout, and then at the beginning of every month that passes.  They happily discuss habits and lifestyles and make suggestions as to how you can help start this process.  And the goals per month are realistic.  This to me shows that they’re committed to your success.

The Curves mission statement has at its hard, its commitment to making women stronger & healthier.

The Curves mission statement has at its hard, its commitment to making women stronger & healthier in every respect.

Let’s see.  I got my initial stats done (and oh my God I’m not brave enough to share them here!!!) and I have managed to show up three times a week (so far).  According to one of the trainers, in the first month, you feel the effects.  In the second, you see the difference.  It’s in the third month when people see the difference.

So stay tuned! 😉
