I did not know that there was a “term” or a “category” for the type of mom and spouse that I am, at least until I collaborated with Tala of Mommy {T} Coach a few weeks ago for her blog give-away, and guest blog post. Apparently there is, and I am one of the many so-called trailing spouses.
Let’s face it: the word “trailing” itself doesn’t exude a lot of positivity. Somehow it sounds like you’re sacrificing and giving up a lot (dreams, ambitions, etc) in a valiant effort to stay true to your vows. To a certain extent, when you make this choice, everything I’ve said holds true; and if you’re anything like me, then all you’ll see at first is the concern, the worry and the anxiety that comes with such a change. BUT! As the Care Bears (yes, the Care Bears!) have said time and again, every cloud has a silver lining. Now, four years into my “trailing spouse” role, I can most definitely tell you that it is more than just a silver lining.

Thank you so very much Mommy {T} Coach, for allowing me to share yet another part of myself. 🙂

Thanks Jen. A real nice piece! the advice you shared rings true for anyone who has had to move out of their birthplace and the sense of comfort that it came with. Can relate with my own moments of carrying heavy parcels from Ikea or groceries while taking the train and walking 10 more mins home! But you do discover more of your inner strength and abilities (I recently found out I can bake decently, hehe!) And you can only feel proud because you feel this sense if achievement and a better respect for yourself 🙂 Congrats Jen and keep it up!
